1974 Double Headed New Zealand Coins
Posted on
Double-headed and double-tailed coins are extremely rare in New Zealand numismatics, so it is especially rare that there are two known double-headed 1974 coins across different denominations.
The two coins in question are a 5c and 10c piece. Both are circulation pieces and both were struck at the Royal Australian Mint. Like all other known double-headed and double-tailed coins struck at the Royal Australian Mint, the coins are struck in coin alignment. These two are some of the earliest double-headed/double-tailed coins to be struck at the Royal Australian Mint too.
The coins last appeared at auction as lot 121 in Noble auction 119 in November 2018 (the 5c piece) and lot 96 in Noble auction 100 in July 2012 (the 10c piece).
